High-Purity Gas Pipeline Construction and Installation Standards
Jun 15,2025
Introduction
Materials and design provide the starting point; construction and installation practices determine whether the installed system will meet final POU purity. Cleanroom welding, controlled purging, and methodical testing are mandatory for UHP systems.
Cleanroom welding — why it matters
• Welding in an uncontrolled environment deposits particulates, oil and moisture on internal surfaces.
• For UHP pipelines, welding should be performed under a controlled environment (cleanroom or local clean-enclosure), using orbital welding for thin wall tubing and high repeatability.
• Inert gas (high-purity argon) backing prevents oxidation and contamination of the internal weld surface.
Purging and cleaning procedures
• Objective: remove particles, residual atmosphere, moisture and hydrocarbons.
• Typical protocol: mechanical cleaning (as required) → nitrogen purge cycles → vacuum evacuation → repeated purge/evacuate until analysis shows compliance.
• For EP finished pipe, protect surface and avoid mechanical damage during handling.
Test & verification suite
• Helium leak detection (mass spectrometer): identify leaks down to 10⁻⁹–10⁻¹⁰ mbar·L/s as appropriate.
• Particle counts: laser particle counters used after purge to confirm particle concentration targets (down to 0.05–0.1 µm where required).
• Moisture & oxygen analysis: online or spot measurement to verify water and O₂ at ppb/ppt or specified thresholds.
• Pressure & strength testing: hydrostatic or pneumatic tests per code and internal SOPs.
Documentation & traceability
• Maintain welding logs, material test reports (MTRs), surface finish certificates (Ra), cleaning records, purge and test records. These documents are essential for audit trails in semiconductor and pharmaceutical facilities.
Case example
A wafer fab experienced recurring high H₂O readings after a third-party installation. Litech remediated by re-welding critical runs in a clean environment and performing triple purge sequences; final H₂O fell <5 ppb and process stability returned.
Conclusion
Only through disciplined execution — cleanroom welding, methodical purge cycles, sensitive leak and contamination testing, and full trace documentation — can an installed high-purity gas system meet the rigorous POU specifications required by advanced processes.
